Washington Park is an upcoming 88-acre park at the former Florida Dept. of Transportation borrow pit. The borrow pit was where they borrowed dirt to build the US-41 overpass near 29th St E in 1957. Now dredge material from Port Manatee is being used to fill the borrow pit. This requires 62,000 dump truck loads and may take as long as 9 years to complete. The cost to move the fill is between $6-9 million, which will be paid by the Army Corps of Engineers. These plans are for the first phase, which includes a one-story community center and parking lot. Construction is slated to begin in October, 2024, and this phase of the park is scheduled for completion in April, 2025.
